Exchanging commission research: Marie Hanrahan

The title for Maries project was Radiation and Mutation. When i heard this i thought of artist such as Julie Cockburn, and Edward Muibridge and such disasters like Chernobyl and Hiroshima.  I'll explore the theme on my own and where i might have gone with this heading, this then look at Maries blog and see what else i could add, this way new ideas and perspectives are thrown into the work and maybe give it a new direction or shead some light onto different ideas within the theme.

After the disaster which struck Chernobyl, the radiation caused a much longer problem to the initial crisis of the nuclear power melt down. For generations to come would see this affect in the children born after the crisis. Paul Fusco takes a photographic documentary of the afetr math of the children affected. The images are challenging to look at but powerful too. In the link below is his narrated documentary with his images of the different children affected and statistics of the after math.
I thought this could give some basis, facts or back ground to the idea of waste directly or indirectly affecting humankind in the ways of mutation, disease or disfiguring the form. Taking points from real life and real events which caused such things to happen.

Julie Cockburn

Julis Cockburn didnt really intend on looking into mutation at all, however the images she created by crafting on top of the photos gave a very interesting aesthetic. There is an interesting article below from a photography magazine i follow online called SEESAW. I'm not sure if this would give any help but maybe it bring an idea of collarge, technique or compossion to your images and maybe have a contemporary spin on what it is your looking at.

Eadward Muybridge

Eadward Muybridge, prehaps greater known for is running horse set of images, was a pioneer of time laps photography . He was fasinated with the ways of deformed people oftyern using them for his subjects. Maybe one of the most famous sets from this particular series is the child walking on all fours.
I looked at Muybridge really because its stook with me ever since seeing him at the Tate Britain exhibition in 2010

Ralph Eugene Meatyard

From a different photography magazine i follow online FACTION MAGAZINE i found Ralp E Meatyard and his set of work called Dolls and Masks which give a very creepy aesthetic and one of certain unease. I thought this might be useful in ways of giving ideas to create such unease or ambiance in the images.

I especially like this image above as the focus lies on the massive hand, then you notice the face then the toy doll poking out of the pocket, its an eary image all out of proportions and scale, give a sense of unknown narrative and confusion for the viewer maybe something to play off when thinking of mutation.

Fashion: Constructed Image Set Build

In our group we came up with three ideas, we couldn't decide on one right away so started to research all three then will choose one when it come apparent which is the strongest.

Film Noir Mood Board
One idea was to look at the Literature themes, here we thought about perhaps detective novels and using the descriptions from a book and translating them into an image. Straight away from thinking this we thought Film Noir. However even though the final image might have been good aesthetically we thought it might not push us to our fullest potential and thought it was something we could perhaps do in out time to play with this kind of lighting and effects for an image.

Protest Mood Board
Another idea was to follow the News and Current Affairs theme, looking at the protests something we all as a group was interested in and some of us had been to.  This idea appealed to us much more than the Film Noir idea as it was something that could push us as a group and as a concept. Its still something we might be looking at as it could be a very strong image and have some structure behind it. One doubt was how to represnt the street protests in a studio, it might loose its feel or meaning by trying to recreate the protest in a studio, might almost become far to 'fake' and maybe mock. However this is strong idea which hasnt been completely struck off like the Film Noir idea.

Andy Warhol Mood Board
The idea we decided to carry on with was one which followed the Art and Artist theme, decided to look into the world of Pop Art and mainly focusing on Warhol. As a group we felt this might be a bit of fun to do and definitely push us to create something worth while. We thought this could be executed to a high level in a studio as our initial plan is to break the studio into three sets then have three models, one in each room. Playing on the repetition of Warhols work have everything about the room identical to each other, same props etc but in different colour.

Running with the Art and Artist idea: Andy Warhol

Key Points to idea:
  • Set to be in three
  • Each room in its own colour
  • same props in same position as each other in the rooms
  • Each model to look same
  • Must be an anti-consumerist under tone
Soup
Andy Warhol

We decided to play off the repetition of Andy Warhols work  as it was in a way his way of protesting against the pop culture and how celebrities and people of stature can be in a way churned out like as if in a factory. Also to enforce this the type of print was even able to be done in a large scale, mass produced way. The screen printing process cuts out the individuality of the celebrity.

Kym Mumford: Build Lead
Harry Scott: Props, Camera Master
Chris Turner: Shoot Co-ordinator, Health and safety
Josh Jordan: Casting, Post Production

For some of the set i think there should be some through back reffrences to the era of the pop art movement, hippie and rock and roll times.

Set inspiration and ideas:

Taking a book from the libary gave me huge inspiration for the general set build, the book called All - American Ads 60's. From here i've got some understanding of what might have made up an ideal room in the 60's. The fact that i taken it out of the ad's book buys right into the consumerism idea. The general idea of the room i want to feel as though its a clean cut shrine to consumerism.

Guy Bourdin:

Looking through a Guy Bourdin book i came across a few photos to inform our direction with the idea.
Below is photo for the Vogue Paris 1977 what interested me to this image was the shine on the back wall paint. Its this shine that might be very useful for our set as it sparks off visual connotations of plastic, which then gives the idea to the viewer of everything in the set showing falseness.

Bourdin's 1985 photo for Vogue Paris has certainly sparked off many ideas. The fact the mannequins are naked reaching out beyond the shop front glass to the models dressed in the clothes gave me ideas that i a way we ourselves have started to become the mannequins as people strive for brands and the newest fashion trend.

Stills from the film Hurt Locker helped me with an idea that in a way we might have lost our way with consumption.  In the film the main character is a bombs disposal soldier, when he comes back from war he is given a simple task by his wife to pick up some cereal but is confronted by walls of cereal. It doesnt seem real in conparason between his work, life threatening war zone and back to 'life' where its literaly just consumerism and wants, shown by these walls upon walls of produce.

Chris Jordans work really opened my eyes to our self desire to consume, directlyy, indorectly, knowing and unknowingly doing this.

First visualizations after some sketching, i came up with this clear image from playing around and drawing it out on photoshop.

Nimbus Lighting
Rochester
As been given the responsibility of props i approached a local lighting shop to see if they would be able to supply us with lighting and other props. They did seem very interested and very happy to help. I've arranged for another meet to fully go over our idea, show them designs and in general just keep them in the loop so they feel more at ease lending their property to us.
The shop has lava lamps, clocks, mirrors and ambient lighting that we might be able to use.

Today I aproached a music shop in Chatham to see if i could maybe borrow three guitars for the shoot under the same conditions as i discussed with Nimbus Lighting. The manager wasn't in but the man there said he should go for it.

Went around many shops in the area of Chatham to enquire about borrowing a mannequin, FAB in the pentagon shopping store seemed the most likely to let us have 2, however needed to confirm with head management. Other stores also would look into it for me, DEBENHAMS and PRIMARK would also look into it for me.

Idea Progression

New set idea
New set idea (clearer view of supporting frame)

The idea is to slightly draw more focus on the, what was only an under tone in the last idea, statement on over consumption and our acceptance of global brands and global dominance of brands.

The simularities from the previous idea are:
  • Colours
  • the use of repetition to reference Warhol
  • the brands used having a negative back story
  • targeting certain brands which have some extreme negattive effects in peoples life or environment in areas.
Whats Changed:
  • use of set
  • general aesthetic (model not being in a 'house room' but being squashed from the brands behind him.
  • presentation of the image, three images on one print rather than three rooms in one set
  • the more brands we can involve, which is better and can get the idea across to the view more effectively
  • what the model will be wearing and now a male model
  • how we're now using the colour, letting the brands be the colour

How we propose to use the colour?

style on each board

Nestle KitKat Wallpaper for set

Have most from high quality photocopy or photographs then high quality prints in a repeated style to carry on with Warhol feel and reference to repetition, but i propose to have real wrappers stuck onto of the wallpaper to give it 3D areas and make the whole paper stand out, this would be much more cost effective yet still give a very strong aesthetic message.
This style for each colour board with different brands and products but same technique of displaying them.

So far what we want in each colour:

Red

  • Coca Cola original (red can)
  • Nestle kitkat (red wrapper)
  • Marlboro (red label)
  • Budwiser (red logo and can)
  • McDonalds Chips (red box)
  • Durex Feather lite (red wrapper)
  • Pharmaceuticals
Blue
  • Schwepps Lemonade (blue packets, still part of coca cola)
  • Nestle Yorkie (blue wrapper)
  • Fosters (blue can)
  • Durex extra safe (blue packets)
  • Windsor Blue (blue box)
  • Pfizer (blue logo)
  • Pharmaceuticals
Yellow
  • Fanta (yellow label and coca cola brand)
  • Nestle Breakaway (yellow wrapper)
  • Nestle Babymilk powder (yellow box, 1980 scandal)
  • Strongbow (yellow can)
  • Durex flavoured
  • Virginia West (yellow wrapper)
  • Shell (yellow logo)
  • Pharmaceuticals

Rough idea of cost:

Sheet Acrylic 6foot x2foot £21

Wood to make the support frame

wodd to make support frame

price of sheet wood (need 3 or 4

Sheet wood for the wall

We need:

  • sheet acrylic 6 x 2foot £21
  • sheet acrylic 6 x 4foot  £43
  • Wood for support frame £21.50 for smooth wood or £16.19 for rougher (this is if it deffonatly wont be provided at uni)
  • 3 sheet of thin wood for the props, wallpaper and model to be on £5.99each = £17.97
  • One wood sheet to be on the support frame at all times £5.99
For the creation of the set (no props, paper or suit)

= 6x2foot acrylic sheet £66.46 divided by the whole team = £13.30ish
=6x4foot acrylic sheet  £88.46 divided by the whole team = £17.70ish
{both done with the most expensive wood, this is the highest total we think it will be to actually build the set, however its always good to have more in the bank than less so maybe all put £20 in?}

For the props such as cans, chocolate, smokes, beers. boxes etc we're not sure yet as we can get some free and get most cheap from being able to go to a brookers store.

Amazing film, cheesy but has pretty much everything we're trying to say. It is a 1980s horror but also pretty political

We had problems with the practicalities with the laiyng down on a 45degree angled bed of advertising, however i think this idea may be better for what we want to show, plus an extra idea has been injected into the mix.

_________________________________________________________________________________

New plan

We wanted to exaggerate the aesthetics of the whole image, to create the impression of full submersion and no escape from endless bombardment of advertising and the need to consume.
We decided to have the set as big as we can and with false perspective make it look endless. This idea still keeps the three colours of our original idea, relating to Warhol, but also edging more the impact visually of Chris Jordan.

SKETCH HERE

Lighting of the set - basic test

After being changed from studio 3 to studio 2, the hight couldnt be the main focus of the set, instead we decided to have the impact in the wifth. The set will be 20 foot in long and 10foot high with the door approx 2 to 3 foot high.

This is a test with the kino light, they seem good but not too powerfull. We'll keep them in mind however they might not be enough as we need to light the boards and path behind the doorway.

A daydo light was tested to bring a spot on the subject. This will highlight him out from the set, make him pop.

Test with Arri lights on the back walls, behind the door. Using the 1K Arri lights worked very well.

Finding the suit

We were looking for a smart but not overly expensive suit, a suit which a younger office worker would buy. A suit which says he's in an office but still has his finger on today's pulse of fashion.

Zara Light Grey

Zara Dark Grey
These suit looked the part, would come to about £150 for the basic suit. However didnt fit the model.

A better fitted suit we found in H&M. A good suit which ties in with our concept and looks modern and in date.

Our model Tom dropped out, double booked our shoot date, although this is a big blow to our schedule and team, its not a disasster because our reserve model is still more than happy to do the shoot and luckilly the suit fits him.

SET BUILD

How i made the wallpaper
To cut down costs, i made all the paper by hand, sticking together to make individual rolls.

Building the set through lens, correcting the perspective
We split into groups, wallpaper and set building. Chris Josh and i focused mainly on the flats behind the door and the stage ramp. making sure it would hold enough wait to support the model and allow for movement.
Wallpapering
behind the set

the build from behind and ramp
Model positioning
To test through the lens and for lighting, build and finishing touches we used me to stand in for the model as physically i was closest to the body shape of our model. By doing this we could judge how much wallpapering needed to be done on the background and finialise the ideal spot for the model to stand to be able to see the product and perspective behind him allowing the viewers to still read our image in the desired way.

lighting behind the set

lighting the back of the set
Lighting behind the set was very important, for us to shoot at an fstop of 8 we needed to have strong lighting on the back boards of the set, with the flash on the front wall we needed a far few arri lights for the back and a pro light flash for the higlights on the models silhouette.

Tests of continuous lighting
The continuous lighting wasnt powerful enough, even when we covered the whole studio in polly boards to create a type of huge light tent. Meaning any light in the space would bounce around back to the set wall.
